How Long Should a Resume Be?
By the MyResumeExpert Team · Updated October 3, 2026 · 3 min read
The short answer: one page for students and early-career professionals, two pages for most experienced professionals. What matters more than page count is that every line earns its place.
Resume length by career stage
| Career stage | Recommended length | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Student or fresher | 1 page | Education, projects, internships, skills |
| 1–5 years of experience | 1 page | Recent roles with measurable results |
| 5–10 years | 1–2 pages | Progression, scope and key achievements |
| 10+ years or management | 2 pages | Leadership, scale and strategic results |
| Executive, academic or federal roles | 2–3+ pages | Publications, board roles, detailed requirements |
Academic CVs and some government applications have their own rules and can be much longer. Follow the instructions in the job posting when they exist.
When a two-page resume is the right choice
- You have more than about ten years of relevant experience.
- The role requires a list of certifications, licences, projects or technical skills.
- You are applying for senior, management or specialist roles where scope matters.
Make sure the most important information is on page one, and add your name to the top of page two. Our two-page resume template is built for longer careers.
How far back should your resume go?
Usually the last 10–15 years. Older roles can be listed in a short "Earlier experience" line with job title and employer, or left out if they are not relevant. Remove graduation years if you are concerned about age bias and have significant experience.
How to shorten a resume
- Cut bullet points that describe duties instead of results.
- Limit older jobs to one or two bullets each.
- Combine short-term roles or similar positions where it makes sense.
- Remove references, "References available on request", hobbies that do not support the role, and outdated skills.
- Shorten your summary to three lines.
- Tighten wording: "Led a team of 6" instead of "Was responsible for leading a team of six people".
- Adjust margins and font size slightly, but never below about 10 pt for body text.
Tip: Our one-page resume templates help you see exactly what fits as you write.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a two-page resume okay?
- Yes, for experienced professionals. Recruiters are used to two-page resumes when the extra content is relevant. Students and early-career candidates should aim for one page.
- Can a resume be longer than two pages?
- Only in specific cases such as academic CVs, some executive roles or government applications that ask for detailed information.
- Does a one-page resume look better?
- A one-page resume is easier to read quickly, but it should not come at the cost of important experience. Clarity and relevance matter more than length.
- How many bullet points should each job have?
- Three to six for recent roles and one or two for older or less relevant roles.
