How to decide what makes the cut
A one-page resume is an exercise in editing. Start with the job posting and ask of every line: does this help prove I can do this job? Duties that every candidate shares, old roles and generic skills are the first to go.
Prioritise recent, relevant and measurable achievements. Three strong bullets with numbers beat six vague ones. Older jobs can be reduced to a single line with title, employer and dates.
If you genuinely cannot fit your relevant experience on one page after editing, that is a signal that two pages is right for you. Recruiters accept two-page resumes from experienced candidates.
Frequently asked questions
- Should my resume be one page?
- One page is usually right for students, graduates and people with under about ten years of experience. Senior professionals often need two.
- How do I fit my resume on one page?
- Focus on the last ten years, keep bullets to one or two lines and remove anything that does not support the job you want.
- What if my resume is longer than one page?
- Use one of our two-page or three-page templates, designed for longer careers.
