How to Write an IT Resume for Jobs in India
By the MyResumeExpert Team · Updated October 3, 2026 · 3 min read
Large IT services companies, product companies and startups hire very differently. Service companies often hire in large batches and screen for fundamentals and eligibility; product companies and startups look for depth, ownership and proof of what you have built.
The same core resume works for all of them, but what you emphasise should change. Here is how.
The core IT resume
- Contact details with LinkedIn and GitHub
- Summary: role, years, stack and one result
- Technical skills, grouped
- Experience with results (or internships and projects for freshers)
- Projects
- Education
- Certifications
Use a single-column, ATS-friendly template: large employers in India commonly use applicant tracking systems and portals to manage high application volumes.
For IT services companies
- Meet the eligibility criteria and state them clearly: degree, year, CGPA or percentages as requested.
- Show strong fundamentals: programming languages, DBMS, OOP, data structures and computer networks.
- List certifications that clients value, such as cloud (AWS, Azure), testing or specific technologies.
- For experienced roles, name the client domain (banking, insurance, retail, telecom), the technologies and your contribution to delivery.
- Mention flexibility where relevant: location preferences, shift readiness or client-site experience.
Senior Software Engineer — banking client (retail payments) • Built and maintained 14 Spring Boot microservices processing 2M+ transactions a day. • Cut month-end batch run time from 6 hours to 90 minutes by optimising SQL and parallelising jobs. • Coordinated releases with the onshore team across 3 time zones; zero critical incidents in 18 months.
For product companies and startups
- Lead with ownership and impact: features you shipped, users affected, performance or revenue changes.
- Show depth in your core stack and system design for mid and senior roles.
- Link to GitHub, open-source contributions, a portfolio or a technical blog.
- Keep it to one page for under five years of experience; two pages at most later.
- Mention competitive programming ratings or hackathon results if they are strong.
WeakWorked on backend APIs for the mobile app.
StrongOwned the order-tracking API for a food-delivery app (Go, PostgreSQL, Redis), handling 3,000 requests per second at peak with p99 latency under 120 ms.
Ownership, stack, scale and a performance metric.
Technical skills section
Languages: Java, Python, SQL Backend: Spring Boot, REST, Microservices, Kafka Frontend: React, TypeScript Cloud and DevOps: AWS (EC2, S3, Lambda), Docker, Jenkins, Kubernetes Databases: PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis
Only list what you can be interviewed on. Technical interviews in India often go deep on the skills at the top of your list.
Common IT resume mistakes in India
- Long lists of every technology touched in training
- Copying the project description from the client contract instead of your contribution
- A three-page resume for a candidate with two years of experience
- Biodata details: date of birth, father’s name, religion, declaration
- No links to code for developer roles

Frequently asked questions
- How long should an IT resume be in India?
- One page for freshers and early-career engineers, and up to two pages for experienced professionals and architects.
- Should freshers apply to service companies with a different resume?
- Use the same resume but make eligibility details, fundamentals and certifications prominent. For product companies, lead with projects and links to code.
- Should I mention the client name on my resume?
- Only if it is not confidential. Otherwise describe the client by industry, for example "a leading European bank".
- Do Indian IT companies use ATS?
- Many large employers use applicant tracking systems and job portals to manage high application volumes, so a clean, text-based, single-column resume is the safe choice.
